Great Turnout for Spring 2013 Crawl

What a great turnout for the Spring 2013 Crawl! Thanks to all of the yarn crawlers who made their way across the Triangle to visit our wonderful local yarn shops. The combination of The Hunt and the very tempting Grand Prize encouraged an outstanding number of crawl participants estimated at 80 to complete the challenging journey of visiting all nine participating yarn shops.

A quick shout out to those ladies who came all the way from Virginia Beach – We hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Spring2013 Crawl Kickoff

We enjoyed meeting everyone who attended the Crawl Kickoff at Great Yarns bright and early Saturday morning. The first 20 attendees were greeted with a Triangle Yarn Crawl project bag and an extra raffle ticket for door prizes. We had a variety of bagels from Bruegger’s Bagels and pinwheels from Whole Foods of Raleigh and more baked goods provided by yarn crawl organizers. Here’s the doughnut muffin recipe for those of you who loved them.

Our local designers Mari Chiba of Mari Knits and Rohn Strong of Strong and Stone made The Hunt possible. We hope everyone enjoyed searching for the stuffed TYC symbols hidden throughout the shops and figuring out the three word phrase. Be sure to redeem your Ravelry coupon code before it expires on Sunday, March 31st.

Thanks to our wonderful yarn shops who put together great promotions and raffle prizes full of goodies, and to Cascade Yarns for donating additional raffle prizes. Congratulations to all of our LYS Raffle Prize winners!  We apologize in advance if we’ve misspelled your name.

With support from our great sponsors, we put together quite an impressive Grand Prize made up of beautiful patterns and yarns from Avillion Farm, Berroco, The Fibre Company, SweetGeorgia, Quince & Co. and Swans Island along with neat project bags and a very cute zippered pouch from Namaste, a beautiful clay yarn bowl from my mother-in-law Barb (the first of it’s kind), and handknit-friendly soap from Soakwash. Congratulations to Brenda Wills who won!

A huge thanks to our Sponsors, especially sustaining sponsors like Carolina FiberFest and all nine Triangle-area yarn shops, and TYC Organizers Michelle, Jessica, Gail, Nicole and Lauren who made this event possible. We couldn’t have pulled it off without their support. THANK YOU!

Featuring Cozy

cozy logo

Q: How did Cozy come about and how long have you been in business?
A: Deb Nickell, co-owner, Cozy opened 9/8/2001, and I never say that date that I don’t think about what happened a few days later. The store that was in our location prior to Cozy was Fiberspace. It was owned by my dear friend and now Cozy employee, Lise Ebel. Fiberspace sold many things related to fiber including yarn, and Margaret Urban was the yarn manager there as well. I think of the yarn department at Cozy as our legacy from Fiberspace and it would not be as successful as it is without Margaret. I was ready to retire in 2011 but luckily for me, and for Cozy, my friend Emily Wexler decided to become a co-owner. She had been the store manager for many years and knows the business backwards and forwards. We recently celebrated our first anniversary as partners.
Q: What makes Cozy unique?
A: Deb Nickell, The inspiration for Cozy was a handful of small businesses in other cities that had diverse merchandise in one store. None were exactly like Cozy, and Cozy has certainly evolved in its 11 year history. Though we have an eclectic array of merchandise, from yarn to shoes, I think the thing that makes us stand out is our employees. There are 10 of us now, and we have worked together for many years. We love what we do, and all love to knit and/or crochet…and enjoy our Danskos!
Q: What does Cozy enjoy most about participating in the Triangle Yarn Crawl?
A: Margaret Urban, I love the opportunity to meet new people during the yarn crawls! We might not have the most yarn, but we love the way the yarn department fits in with the rest of the shop. I often refer to Cozy as “a sort of chick department store.” (Not that we don’t value our male customers who knit and crochet, but where else can you find yarn, great clothing, local jewelry, shoes, accessories, and clever gifts all in one great location?)
Q: Is there anything else Cozy would like to share with TYC readers?

A: Margaret Urban, We have free help hours six days a week. Of course we give priority to those who are working with our materials, but if it’s quiet we’re happy to take a look at your other projects.

Featuring The Twisted Knitter

The Twisted Knitter

Q: How did The Twisted Knitter come about and how long have you been in business?

A: The Twisted Knitter was born on May 31st, 2011, about 3 years earlier than originally planned.  I had always said that when both of our kids were out of high school that I would love to open up a yarn shop in Mebane. My collection of yarn, patterns and dyes were slowly taking over our house. So, when the store front on Clay Street in downtown Mebane dropped into my lap, it was an opportunity that my husband and I could not pass up. I could have never have dreamed that the number of knitters and crocheters in Mebane would come out in droves!! Come this Memorial Day, 2013, The Twisted Knitter will be open for 2 years!

Q: What makes The Twisted Knitter unique?

A: What makes The Twisted Knitter unique you ask…I dye my own brand of yarn. You won’t find The Twisted Knitter yarn anywhere else but here at the shop. The majority of my yarn base is sock and sport weight, but I have an assortment of other weights that I can dye as well. I also do custom dyeing as well. I also put a skein of The Twisted Knitter yarn, specifically dyed for the TYC  in the TYC goodie bag.

The Twisted Knitter

Q: What does The Twisted Knitter enjoy most about participating in the Triangle Yarn Crawl?

A: I really enjoy meeting and talking to all of the “crawlers,” the ones that are returning and the new ones, as they come into town.
Q: Is there anything else The Twisted Knitter would like to share with TYC readers?
A: I am really looking forward to seeing everyone on the 23rd and 24th of March. If you are ever in town, stop by and knit for a while!
