Featuring Yarns Etc… and Great Yarns
Q: How did Yarns Etc… and Great Yarns come about and how long have you been in business?
A: Yarns Etc… was started in downtown Greensboro on January 2nd, 1995. We have just celebrated 18 years in business! Some of the long time knitters around here remember that I had been the manager of a yarn outlet near Greensboro for five years. When they decided to close I decided to open a store in Greensboro. It was a big space and we had lots of yarn as well as spinning and weaving supplies. When my family decided to move to Chapel Hill I started looking for a second location. I opened Yarns Etc… in Carrboro in 2001. I commuted between the two stores dragging yarn around with me wherever I went. In 2005 there was an opportunity for me to buy Great Yarns in Raleigh. I jumped right in and enjoyed being able to sell yarn in Raleigh too. In 2008, a space opened up next to the Whole Foods in Chapel Hill. Since Great Yarns was next to Whole Foods I knew it was a winning combination as far as a retail site. I also knew I would be very busy and couldn’t be stretched quite so thin anymore. I decided to close the Greensboro location after 14 years. My good friend, Tina Feir took over the space for her Store Gate City Yarns. So there are two stores under the Yarns Etc… umbrella. Both are very busy stores that have different atmospheres but share A LOT of fantastic yarns and inspiration for helping you create what your heart desires.
Q: What makes Yarns Etc… and Great Yarns unique?
A: There are several things that make us unique. One is our vast selection of yarn. We have so much yarn in every weight, every color, every price point. If there isn’t enough in one store we will have it in the other and can get it to you in a matter of days. I love yarn and still get just as excited when something new comes in as I did 18 years ago.
Another thing that makes us unique is our sales staff. Everyone on our staff at both stores has a passion about their handwork skills. They are always learning something new and want to share what they have learned with customers. Their enthusiasm is passed on to the customers who want to learn new skills too. I think we have a total of 178 years of knitting experience and 75 years of crocheting experience between the 2 stores. That’s a lot of skills!
Q: What does Yarns Etc… and Great Yarns enjoy most about participating in the Triangle Yarn Crawl?
A: We have enjoyed participating in the Triangle Yarn Crawl for the past few years. We love seeing old faces and meeting new ones. I love it when several ladies have gotten together and decided to make a day of it. They are all laughing and having a good time together while they plan their next projects. The Yarn Crawl gets people out and seeing new things, and enjoying a yarny day with friends, old and new. We are all so fortunate to live in an area that has so much to offer the fiber fanatic! The TYC is an excellent opportunity to get out in the Triangle and see what the stores are offering.
